Generally, my daily budget when I travel is $50 (€50 in Europe because I’m realistic too). This includes accommodation, transport, tours, and food. Can’t believe it? Let me break it down for you.
My budget for accommodation is $20/€20. Despite the amount, I still assure that I get free breakfasts. ($5-$10 may be cheap for you but that’s already $300 that you’re saving if you’re traveling for at least a month.) My budget for lunch and dinner is $15/€15. In Asia, that’s more than enough to dine in nice restaurants. In Australia and New Zealand, that can get you a kilo of pasta, some veggies/fruits, sauce and it will last you for 2-3 days. Yes, I cook and grocery shop while i’m on holidays!
So…that leaves me with a $15/€15 budget for my tours and transport. Seems very little but to be honest, you don’t need much when your accommodation is in the heart of the tourist attractions. Most of the time, the staff offers a free walking tour which includes an insight of the cities and the buildings’ history.
Sometimes, I go over budget because some excursion prices are already fixed. But it still works out because I also get days when I don’t spend my tour/transport budget at all. Yes, it’s possible! For instance, my tourist Oyster card from London was €30 but it lasted me 3 days and this included a 2 hour trip to and from the Gatwick Airport. At the end of the day, my expenses and budget all balance out!
Spendings aside, I travel with a 75L backpack (recently changed to 55L). The lighter you travel, the more money you save. In fact, you save about $100 per bag for every country that you travel to especially when you’re flying with an Airbus like EasyJet or Monarch airlines.
We ALWAYS have to consider how much we’re saving rather than solely focusing on the expenditures. Paying $5 on your coffee every morning doesn’t sound hectic on your pocket but you have to realize that in 30 days, that accumulates to $150. Maybe not a huge difference but that’s how much my plane ticket from Sydney to Bali cost! (Damn, you could’ve been in Indonesia too)
